Education without fear: securing the future of the south-east through English language education amid national security challenges

Abstract

Education remains a fundamental instrument for societal development, national integration, and sustainable peace. However, persistent security challenges in Nigeria, particularly in the South-East geopolitical zone, have significantly disrupted teaching and learning activities, threatening the future of education and human capital development. This paper examines the role of English Language Education as a strategic tool for securing educational continuity and fostering resilience amid prevailing security concerns. Adopting a qualitative documentary research approach, the study explores how insecurity, including violence, school closures, kidnappings, and social unrest, affects access to quality education and the effective teaching and learning of English, Nigeria’s official language and principal medium of instruction. Drawing on relevant literature and documentary evidence, the paper argues that English Language Education promotes critical thinking, effective communication, social cohesion, and access to global knowledge, thereby equipping learners with the competencies needed to navigate contemporary societal challenges. The paper further contends that safeguarding educational spaces and strengthening English language instruction are essential for rebuilding confidence in the educational system and securing the future of the South-East region. It recommends enhanced school security, technology-driven learning approaches, teacher capacity development, peace education, and collaborative efforts among stakeholders to ensure uninterrupted learning. The study concludes that education without fear is indispensable for sustainable development, peace building, and long-term socio-economic advancement in South-East Nigeria.
