Cataloguing competencies: An overview of the cataloguing knowledge required by librarians in Nigerian university libraries

Abstract

Cataloguing is paramount in Nigerian university library services and purely a technical process requiring specialized knowledge and skills, application of standards and protocols, use of technical tools and software, focus on organizing and processing library materials, and emphasis on accuracy, consistency, and quality control. This paper on cataloguing competencies, focuses on overviewing the cataloguing knowledge competency required by librarians in Nigerian university libraries. Fundamentally, librarians need knowledge of foundational cataloguing and metadata principles which involves understanding the historical foundations that shape contemporary metadata practices and this encompasses knowledge of identity management and authority control, as well as the principles underlying controlled vocabularies. It also includes familiarity with various classification structures and the capacity to recognize major classification schemes. Additionally, it involves knowledge of conceptual models as well as systems and technologies that support metadata functions, including indexing, database structures, authorized text strings, and unique identifiers for effective retrieval. Some of the challenges hindering librarians’ competencies include inadequate   tools   and   technologies required for bibliographic control practices, and lack of implementation of Resource Description and Access (RDA). Some recommendations were made which among others include that constant training and retraining of librarians in order to improve their cataloguing knowledge and that the university libraries should provide adequate cataloguing tools with which the librarians can master the art of cataloguing
